Amazon Kindle 2 – No more books?

The Amazon Kindle 2, for those who aren’t aware, is a flat handheld tablet device that can be used as an electronic book reader (eBooks). Despite being mainly a book reading device, the Kindle 2 also features a web browser that lets you read blogs and other suchlike things.

There is an International version of the Kindle now available, though it is currently imported from the US (TAX!) and doesn’t support the free wireless web browsing that it does in its home country (how is that an international product?)

A recent firmware update for the Kindle 2 was released by Amazon, which improves the battery life of the reader by as much as 85% and adds a PDF reader and converter.

Women better with gadgets than men

According to a survey undertaken by electronics retailer, Comet, women are now more confident with technology than males. This flips over the age-old stereotype that men are better with gadgetry than women.

The study showed that 48 per cent of women felt comfortable when it came to using new technology and gadgets, whereas only 47 per cent of men felt the same.

The fact of women taking dominance in the field of gadgetry is further reinforced by the fact the study found that 85 per cent of men believed that they were not the most capable person in the household, when it came to technology devices.

Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse cease selling SE Satio

Mobile phone marketing chains, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U, have both stopped selling the Sony Ericsson Satio mobile phone amidst concerns over the stability of the Symbian-based software on them.

It is unsure whether it is a hardware of software fault, but apparently the phone simply switches itself off or restarts itself when suers try to run certain features of the mobile phone.

Sony Ericsson are claiming that a only a small proportion of the handsets have been returned with the fault. However, they also stated that an over-the-air (OTA) patch was not an option for the fault that is commonly occurring.

China and Brazil are thought to just be a starting point for Dell, as it is believed the computer manufacturer is also negotiating deals with many large mobile networks in other countries, including Vodafone in the United Kingdom. However, there is currently no expected timescale for these additional territories.

The LG Watch Phone (LG GD910)

LG have developed a modern, James Bond-style mobile phone/watch combo for gadget lovers. The wobile (watch/mobile geddit?) has been out on the high streets for a couple of months now, so let’s take a look at what this thing can actually do.

The LG watch phone (or GD910) comes with most of the features that are taken for granted on phones these days, namely things like HSDPA, video calling, T9 for texting, bluetooth (for the headset,  you didn’t think you would be holding your watch to your ear all the time, right?) and even Mp3 playback support.

As fun and quirky as this little 90s-looking digital watch is, it comes at a hefty price, with an RRP of around £500.

Sony Ericsson Aino features PlayStation 3 Remote Play

Sony Ericsson recently unleashed their feature-packed Aino mobile phone, which is the first device, other than the PlayStation Portable, that allows users to connect to their PlayStation 3 console using Remote Play.

Remote Play allows the user to boot up and control the PS3 console from anywhere with an internet connection. Once connected, the PS3’s display is then streamed wirelessly to the device, giving users access to their media library and some other PS3 apps, on the go. One such application that works well with the Aino is PlayTV, a television broadcast viewing solution on the PS3. Using the Aino, you can watch and record live TV at any time.

The Aino also comes with an impressive 8.1-megapixel camera, Assissted GPS (AGPS) and a 3-inch touch screen.

Thoughts on Unlocking

Ever found yourself stuck? Need to do something tricky like find a web proxy? Unlock your mobile phone? Many people do this daily, a lot have unlocked their iphones as it came out only on 02 at first. Unlocking it meant they could use it on various mobile operator networks. Web proxies are often used to get around blocked access to specific websites.

What you have to think about in all of this is the legal implications. Is it legal? Is it moral to ‘unlock’ software? What about the people who have developed the product or service? Or will it be fine as you can get away with it? Maybe with so many people wanting to unlock something, the original thing shouldn’t be locked in the first place!
